Overview:
Through the angry lies of wicked men, Paul and Silas are beaten and imprisoned for doing a good thing. They respond by praising God. God responds by freeing them from their physical chains and freeing a pagan jailer from spiritual chains.
For pondering and discussion:
- Are there painful or seemingly unfair circumstances in your life? Have you responded like Paul and Silas or have you grumbled and complained? What would a Christ-honoring response look like?
- When you pray for persecuted Christians is your priority their relief or their belief? Doesn’t the Bible place more emphasis on the faith of the servants and their witness to Christ through the afflictions. How can you be more gospel-centered in praying about our persecuted brothers and sisters?
- Paul took the prison situation as an opportunity to preach the gospel. What challenges do you face which could be an open door to preach the gospel?
- In what ways did the jailer demonstrate immediate gospel fruit?
- God, in His mercy, saved the jailers entire household. Can you think of families or large groups of people who believed the gospel all at once? Whether one or many, repentant sinners are cause for great rejoicing.
Response:
- Let’s strive to love Jesus above all.
- Let’s be people who long to see the gospel progress.
- Let’s learn to look at difficult times as an opportunity to proclaim Christ.
