A Sober Look At Suffering, Part III

{Continued from yesterday’s post. . .}

Marriage

In the garden, sin turned a sublime, harmonious song between the first man and his wife into a dissonant cacophony. Adam would no longer be content to be Eve’s lord, now he would strive to lord it over her. Dominion would no longer satisfy, now he must be domineering.

Eve, in turn, would chafe at the thought of serving in the ignoble role of helper. Why should she serve him? Why should he have the final say? Nay, contrare. She would not lie still while some male chauvinist tried to make her a doormat. She would prove herself equal in dignity and authority. She is woman; hear her roar!

And from that point forward, the relationship intended to picture the love of Christ and His bride would appear somewhere between a distorted, unintelligible copy and a seriously-flawed, amatuerish copy. All of us have witnessed the damaging effects of this now strained union:

Husbands who abuse wives

Absent fathers and husbands

Weak, heartless, effeminate fathers and husbands

Harsh, impudent mothers and wives

Absent mothers and wives

Overbearing, demanding, critical mothers and wives

Divorce, broken homes

Dysfunctional homes

Loveless, chaotic, and violent homes

Leading to:

Depressed, desperate children

Aggressive, violent children

Emotionally unstable children

Kids who just don’t know how to relate

Evil, fleshly, sinful, wicked, corrupt men and women

Which lead to:

Pain and suffering

Murder, rape, robbery, destruction, genocide, abortion, terrorism, evolution, lying, gossip, holocaust, greed, slander, perversion, betrayal, narcissism, adultery, fornication, homosexuality, and molestation.

People consumed with their own happiness who aggressively oppose anyone posing a threat to their achieving it. They love the darkness and will seek to destroy anyone who attempts to bring into their surroundings even a glimmer of light.

Which lead to:

More ugly marriages, broken homes, and sinful tragedies.

The Gospel Empowers Obedience

The gospel empowers our obedience. When we understand he has secured everything we need we naturally follow him. When we soak in the gospel, enjoying his free grace in his word, we can’t help but obey. As we abide in him … Continue reading
